Nokia Nseries helps MTV with climate change campaign by capturing Cannes Young Advertising Creatives in action

Espoo, Finland – During the prestigious 2007 Cannes Lions Advertising Festival, camera crews using video-optimized Nokia N93i devices tagged along with the Young Creative Film Competitors on their 48 hour mission to shoot a 30 second commercial, also using the Nokia N93i, for MTV SWITCH, a new campaign from MTV Networks International designed to educate and encourage alternative options to help save the planet. This marks the first time such extensive access has ever been granted to a camera crew during the two year history of the Cannes Lions Advertising festival.

Recognizing the unique opportunity to capture aspiring young creatives in action and aid in the education of environmental issues, Nokia Nseries recorded the trials and tribulations of the 20 teams representing 20 countries in their race for first place. With 40 hours of content filmed on the Nokia N93i, the footage was edited into an exclusive behind the scenes documentary, “Short Film Shootout: Cannes”, which will be available for broadcast on MTV’s 61 TV channels across 161 countries starting on December 20, 2007.

“Nokia Nseries was thrilled to be a part of this project to arm filmmakers with this exciting new medium of mobile video through which the students could create commercials and the film crew could capture the experience for all the world to see,” said Tapio Hedman, Senior Vice President, Multimedia Marketing, Nokia. “The Nokia N93i devices that were used in this project are a perfect example of how Nokia constantly pushes the frontiers of technology forward to provide innovative new media for everyone to leverage as they create and share their works.”

“We are extremely thankful for the generosity and creativity that Nokia has demonstrated, as well as the talent of these young filmmakers in showing millions of young people around the world how doing small things can make a massive difference to the world’s carbon emissions,” said Bill Roedy, MTV Networks Vice Chairman. “MTV SWITCH is harnessing the power of these creative minds to make climate conscious behaviour an every day reality. Everyone, no matter what age or where they live, can take simple actions to reduce their carbon footprint.”

With the release of the special behind the scenes documentary “Short Film Shooutout: Cannes”, all Young Creative Film Competitors participants were able to contribute to this important environmental campaign. The documentary, as well as additional content, will be available for viewing online after December 20 on http://www.MTVswitch.org and http://www.nseries.com/cannes.

Set in the stylish, yet seedy fictional city of New Haven, Dirk Spanner and the Fallen Idol comes to life through its comic book ambiance. Gripping yet funny stories of conflicts, romance and deception with plenty of movie stars, rip-offs, double-crosses, wigs and moustaches make this an entertaining game that will engage novices through to the most experienced game players.

“Dirk Spanner and the Fallen Idol will re-introduce the long forgotten detective game genre for mobile devices,” said Dr Mark Ollila, Director of Technology and Strategy and Head of Games Publishing, Nokia. “With the combination of stunning visuals and enthralling storylines, players cannot help but be spellbound by this game.”

Featuring Dirk as the lead private eye, players are propelled into mysterious adventures, battling an array of femme fatales and gangsters. From solving the mystery of a stolen statue and a brutal murder, to uncovering the case of an accidental penguin-related death, Dirk will not rest until the case is solved.

Players guide Dirk through mysterious assignments using the unique one-button, camera-based controls, giving players an intuitive way of exploring the city of New Haven. A jazzy soundtrack helps set the mood for each stage of the game.

Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite is mobilizing companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite is mobilizing companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Espoo, Finland – Nokia is recording a surge of new customers for its Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, putting the company at the forefront of accelerated mobile email adoption in the region. Many companies such as Bayerischer Rundfunk, Austrian Federal Football League, Computerlinks and Sparkassen Informatik offer their employees mobile access to email via the Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email solution.

Security, scalability and a broad compatibility with a large number of mobile devices and groupware solutions are among the top criteria for the companies to choose Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email. At the same time the modular structure of Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite allows highest flexibility; a range of applications such as device management or file synchronization can be easily and flexibly added as and when mobility needs grow going forward.

Secure mobile email access was only one aspect for Sparkassen Informatik to implement Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite. Another important factor was remote access to sensitive information in their corporate data base. The solution offers the possibility to share documents and Intranet based content with mobile workers and update the content automatically on the mobile devices. “Given our structure where each branch manages employees independently, multitenancy was a paramount requirement for our wireless email solution, in addition to a secure offering,” says Norbert Schmautz, System administrator for Sparkassen Informatik.

Mobile email is also very important for Computerlinks Switzerland: “Especially in our fast moving business, it is our competitive advantage to be agile – to be able to react quickly to any market condition or customer request in a secure way,” says Derk Steffens, managing director at Computerlinks AG Switzerland. “We have chosen Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite as we wanted to implement the solution behind the firewall – we did not want to make any compromise in security matters.”

The employees of the Austrian Federal Football league work remotely on their emails using Nokia E50 and E61 devices.

“We especially value the flexibility and the ease of use of the Nokia wireless email solution. As the email sycnronization can be activated or switched off at the push of a button, the user himself can decide whether he wants to be available or not,” says Georg Pangl, Managing Director, Austrian Federal Football League. “Thus, private and business life play well together, given the many games we have during the weekends”.

At Bayerischer Rundfunk about 200 reporters use mobile email. Device management helps the company to control the device fleet. “We selected Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email as it fulfilled all our criteria such as fast and secure access to mobile email as well as mobile synchronization of contact and calendar details,” says Josef Spitzlberger IT manager, Bayerischer Rundfunk. “From an IT perspective an easy integration into our existing IT infrastructure was key as well as the central management of all devices via the device management module of Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite.”

It is also very important for staff at the technical directorate to be highly accessible since the IT systems cannot be “down” in a media environment. The alert function running via the Nokia solution enables the technical directorate staff at Bayerischer Rundfunk to be advised quickly if problems arise.

“The examples of Sparkassen Informatik or Bayerischer Rundfunk clearly show how important it is to consider mobility as part of the company’s overall IT strategy. We recommend companies to take a holistic view on mobility solutions rather than focus on single mobility deployments,” says Mikko Stout, sales head for Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, Enterprise Solutions, Nokia. “In this respect, it is paramount that the chosen mobility solution does not only support mobile email, but can scale and grow together with a company’s mobility requirements beyond email, as well as integrate into the existing IT infrastructure according to the highest security requirements.”

International Trade Commission rules in favor of Nokia

International Trade Commission rules in favor of Nokia

No patent infringement found

White Plains, NY, USA – Nokia announced today that a United States International Trade Commission (ITC) judge issued an Initial Determination in favor of Nokia in the action brought by Qualcomm against Nokia alleging patent infringement. The judge found no infringement or violation by Nokia of the three asserted Qualcomm patents. In addition, it was determined that patent ‘473 was found to be invalid.

‘We are pleased with Judge Luckern’s decision and believe it is consistent with and supported by the facts,” said Rick Simonson, Chief Financial Officer, Nokia. ‘This decision confirms our belief that Qualcomm does not have relevant GSM patents. This is another failed attempt by Qualcomm to mislead both Nokia and the telecommunications industry.’

Qualcomm filed its complaint on June 9, 2006 alleging infringement by Nokia of six Qualcomm patents. Prior to the hearing, which began on September 10, 2007, Qualcomm voluntarily withdrew three of the six patents from its complaint. The remaining three patents relate to an invention Qualcomm claims it made when developing CDMA technology. Qualcomm declared the three remaining patents as essential to the GSM standard and subsequently attempted to withdraw its declaration on one of those patents.

Similar patents, relating to CDMA inventions, are at issue in the European and China cases filed by Qualcomm against Nokia.

Qualcomm has yet to prevail in any patent litigation action against Nokia despite it having filed 11 lawsuits around the world over the past two years.

The judge’s Initial Determination will now be forwarded to the full Commission for review. The Commission is scheduled to make its Final Determination by April 14, 2008.

Nokia is the industry leader in wireless innovation and the development of GSM technologies. Nokia has built one of the strongest and broadest IPR portfolios in the wireless industry over the last 15 years, including more than 250 GSM declared essential patent families, through extensive investments in research and development.

City of Maastricht builds mobility from the ground up with Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite

January 7, 2008

City of Maastricht builds mobility from the ground up with Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that the City of Maastricht, Netherlands has selected Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite as their standard platform for mobile applications. The solution enables the administrative officers of the City of Maastricht to integrate 900 Nokia Eseries devices into the Cisco corporate IP telephony system and synchronize contact and calendar details. Furthermore, the city will offer wireless email to some of the employees. To ensure an easy roll out and management of all services, the City of Maastricht is using Nokia Intellisync Device Management. The deployment of the service has started and is estimated to be completed in the beginning of next year.

“Mobile working is increasingly important wherever business is conducted. The efficiencies and the cost-savings it delivers are important criteria for a city such as ours,” said Marc Lustermans, project manager, City of Maastricht. “We have selected Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite as our standard mobility platform given the modular structure of the mobileware which means that it can grow and be customized according to our evolving mobility needs today and tomorrow.”

In order to ensure an easy and cost-effective deployment of the different mobile services, to simplify administration and configuration of the mobile phones in use, device management is an integrated part of the total solution.

“It was important that the City of Maastricht integrated its mobile infrastructure plans into the overall IT strategy for the organization,” says Scott Cooper, senior vice president, Mobility Solutions Unit, Enterprise Solutions, Nokia. “We recommend that all businesses take a similar, more strategic approach towards mobility. Done right, an organization can gain advantage by improving speed and quality of service, while encouraging collaboration and communication between employees, customers and partners.”

“We were looking for innovative yet secure mobility solutions, as a high level of security and data protection is imperative for us as a municipal organization,” said Lustermans. “One decision criterion for the Nokia solution resulted from the fact that we can fully integrate the wireless email solution behind the firewall and hence keep full control of the solution within our own IT department.”

Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite provides access to powerful collaboration tools such as email, contacts, calendar, device management and synchronization of file and data and business applications. Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email as part of Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite works in any groupware environment – ISP, Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes or Groupwise – and can run on any kind of device platform – Symbian, Windows, Palm or Pocket PC. The highly scalable email solution supports more than 100 different devices in addition to Nokia Eseries portfolio. Nokia Intellisync Call Connect client ties employees’ mobile phones into a company’s telephony system. Workers then have all system functions available to them even when out of the office.
